Set limits, but don't end a workout until you've used every resource. Push your body during each set, working until you just cannot lift that weight again. If you must, lower your set length.
Use both weight machines and free weights as you work to build muscle. Free weight training is good for the building of serious muscle. Weight machines, on the other hand, are better at building strength and endurance. Use both types of exercise to ensure that you don't get stuck in a routine which becomes boring and tedious.
